What Makeup Brushes Do What? A Simple Face and Eye Brush Guide

You do not need dozens of brushes to build a capable makeup kit. Understanding the main jobs—base application, powder diffusion, sculpting, eye blending and detail work—makes it much easier to choose useful shapes.

Foundation brush

Use: liquid and cream foundation.

Dense foundation brushes offer controlled placement and make it easy to build coverage in thin layers. The FLAWLESSCORE™ Foundation Brush is a dedicated base tool.

Concealer brush

Use: targeted concealer around the eyes, nose or smaller areas.

A smaller tapered or flat shape gives more precision than a full-size foundation brush.

Powder brush

Use: loose or pressed setting and finishing powders.

A larger, softer head distributes powder over a broader area. Use less product than you think you need and build gradually.

Contour or bronzer brush

Use: controlled placement around cheekbones, temples or jawline.

Angled and sculpted shapes help define where product is placed; softer edges help diffuse it.

Blush brush

Use: applying and blending cheek color.

Rounded or softly tapered shapes work well for diffusing color rather than drawing a hard edge.

Eyeshadow blending brush

Use: softening shadow edges and creating transitions.

Fluffy fibers spread pigment over a wider area. Keep pressure light and build slowly.

Detail or shader brush

Use: placing color on a smaller part of the lid, outer corner or lash line.

Smaller, denser shapes provide more placement control than a fluffy blender.

Eyeliner brush

Use: narrow definition with compatible gel, cream or powder products.

A fine or angled shape helps control line width and direction.

How many brushes do you need?

Start with the jobs in your routine. If you wear base makeup and simple eye looks, a foundation brush, powder brush, blending brush, detail brush and liner brush may cover most needs. Add specialty tools only when they solve a repeated application problem.
