Makeup Brush Motion Explained: Press, Sweep or Buff?

Brush shape matters, but the motion you use with it matters too. Pressing, sweeping and buffing change how a brush meets the face, where product lands and how widely it spreads. Understanding those motions can make a makeup routine more deliberate without adding more tools.

Press: prioritize placement

A pressing motion keeps the brush close to one area. It can be useful when you want to set product locally or place color before softening its edges. The movement is short and controlled rather than travelling across a large section of the face.

Sweep: cover a broader area
